Damn HD video...

I try to edit HD video in sony vegas, and it's so frustrating to work with because whenever I play it back on the time line, it delays.....

Any ideas on how to fix this where I can view HD video on the time line smoothly

Thanks again,
:beer:

Vegas relies heavily on the processor of your system so start there. Then, depending on the codec you are trying to play back, you need to look at your HDD configuration. (RAID and such).

What are you trying to edit?

I'm trying to edit HD video... captured directly from my SONY HC3 [1080i]

HDV is not editing friendly. That's going to be your biggest limitation.

Lots of Ram, and lots of processor power. What are your system specs?

My system sucks....
I'm using a 2003 (or 4) gateway computer.....

Processor = Intel(R) Pentium(R)
Memory = 478MB RAM
OS = XP

IDK if that what you was looking for when you said "Sys. Specs"

yep. Your system sucks :)

Single core Pentium?
478megs of ram is horrid. You should look at 2 gigs of ram.

And a dual core processor. Core duo or core 2 duo. Whatever is in your budget.

If you have a budget, you should look at upgrading soon...

HDV & Crappy computer, equals hell of a time trying to edit. Sorry.

I can see LONG LONG hours of editing in my future. Or I could just convert it to DV... then it doesnt look as good... :(

:dankk2:for the info...

For HDV editing with Vegas I would not recommend anything below 2 GBs. It's not even the CPU that's the limiting factor on your system, but the RAM.

whoa buddy, under 500 mb of ram? is that even possible!? just kidding

seriously though... ram is ultra cheap right now. you can get 2gigs for 80 bucks at newegg.

In this case, the very small RAM capacity is definitely a limiting factor. But as a general matter, I wouldn't say the RAM is more important than the CPU.

I personally give RAM precedence over CPU for video editing (not rendering). Vegas goes beyond the 1 GB of RAM usage (including WinXP's needs) within minutes of using an HDV clip in the timeline. The CPU the guy has might be slower than modern PCs, but it is not prohibitively slow. It can still be used for editing, it's just that rendering will take a longer time. The RAM however, poses a bigger problem, because swapping will make everything not only slow, but completely unresponsive. Before I upgraded to 3 GB of RAM just 2 months ago, I was at 1 GB. I was swapping with Vegas in no time with HDV and each click would take about 40 seconds to go through -- while the hard drive was begging for mercy. So yeah, in his case, it's not the CPU that it's the limiting factor, but the RAM. The CPU would have been a real-real-real problem if it was below 1 Ghz. While playback would be slow, not the whole OS goes down.
