D800 press release

The thing about the 60p on the Nex 5n...it really sucks. The compression breaks down very badly. 720p on the canon 7d is actually better (not including moire) compression wise. The FS100 also smokes the 5n on the 60p front, it doesn't break down on the FS100.

Claiming that the 60p on the Nex5n is better than the Nikon 720p variant is too early. The 720p could easily be better.

Just saw the motorbike D800 film on vimeo. Look good-ish, but nothing looks sharp. I guess the big story is less rolling shutter, and there it looks like they made some big improvements.
huh! lmao, what are you watching on, because on my pc, the footage is gorgous, oh, and sharp as a tack.

Here we go.

Do I run out and buy every body as soon as it comes out? no. Why? Because I don't have the money and I don't rent out bodies. I have 2 cameras a 5D and a NEX-5N. I've given hundreds of people advice about DSLR rigs, vintage prime, and anamorphic lenses here and over at cinema5D. I also did some magic lantern beta testing which led to the CBR bit-rate scaling implementation. I don't mind people taking the piss but your comment just sounds spiteful and is unjustified. Grow up Kholi.
C'mon Anthony... Kholi is one of the most friendly guys over these boards. I never read something that may hint he's not one of your online friends like me and other people @dvxuser. I'm afraid Jason is fully right, that's why I'd rather believe we should never let some bad vibe come and take away the dvxuser spirit. I'm sorry to speak on your behalf mates, but you two Kholi and Anthony belong together to my club. Call me child, I'll appreciate to be spoiled then :-)

They're both Sony sensors and the FS100 has a lower megapixel count and will certainly be better than the D800 in low light. The D3s is the DSLR low light king and the D4 is rumoured to have a stop over the D4. There's 3 issues I have with the FS100- highlight rolloff, it can't shoot stills, it doesn't shoot full frame. The issues I have so far with the D4 are- no 60p 1080p, and aliasing/moire may be a problem. The FS100 certainly will produce a sharper image but that's not a huge issue for me. The FS100 also has a lot of control over picture profiles but as long as I can get a flat image out of the D4 I'll be satisfied. The FS100 has all the usual pro video bells and whistles like that aren't really necessary for narrative work.

I expect we'll see an FS100 D4 shootout in the near future. They are both at a similar price point, are great in low light, and both do uncompressed 4:2:2 out so they are ripe for comparison.

I would love to see the shootout for sure between the D4 and FS100. I would also would like to see a sample where the highlight rolloff is falling short on the FS100 like you mentioned. Throw me a link if you come across one and thanks for the info.

The FS100 vs the D800 for video?.....go with the FS100 all day every day. This camera has such a packed sensor that low light will not be it's strongest suit. It's roughly the same pixel density as a D7000 or 7D/60D/T3i, so still good as all DSLRs seem to be vs 1/3 and 2/3 cams, but not as good the FS100 or the D4 or 1DX. The FS100 has a much lower MP sensor to start with, it has proper audio, a better monitor, better options for video hands down.

I totally agree with the analysis of the head to head comparison and the FS100 being a clear winner for dedicated video. The low light performance will likely be better, maybe not an extreme difference but maybe significant.

For those of us that are looking for a camera that does pretty darn good video and great stills, the D800 has it's advantages over the FS100. Autofocus with other lens options from Nikon is a HUGE advantage for one-man operations and the D800, also the sensor crop feature means the 24-70 f2.8 lens becomes 24-105mm (yes, the menu to change the crop is probably too complicated, hopefully we'll see a user-assignable button for this). The body is also lighter, smaller, and easier to conceal in tight situations, a big advantage in many ways.

No XLR audio, an inadequate monitor, and a fairly modest codec make the D800 not the perfect video camera, but it's just over half the price of the Sony and offers the ability to work with all Nikon lenses natively with autofocus and iris control, again a huge advantage over the FS100 and the limited selection of lenses.

Thinking this may be a great camera upgrade for us that doubles for great stills and Web-ENG production.

You can have a look at the zacuto shootout.

:-D I'm not so sure of that, Kholi. Anthony has embraced the DSLR movement a way before any one of us : ) He was an early adopter of the D90, later 5DII... I guess you (we ;) can both compete in the same glass league anyway ;-)

Nah, Anthony didn't adopt anything before I did: I had a D90 the day before it was released in the states, and a GH1 the day it was released in Japan.

Here we go.

I guess the smiley faces etc didn't really help get the tone of the post across? Strike a nerve, yeah?

Here's another smiley just in case: =D

We should all be able to take shots if we dish them out, light-hearted ones I mean.

LOL But you probably forgot to report about your D90 event here, so never happened ;-)

Yes, you two should be in touch through PMing at least. High time to the successive step. I heard from some bird that Anthony will be shooting in the States, why don't you give him an hand, Kholi? I'd love to follow up the joint venture :-)

What? http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...d-Optimizing-the-Nikon-D90-D-Movie-Mode-Image

Lol... I was all up in the first D90 thread reporitng back...

:3 Me thinks you were busy with RED at the time, though.

I'm surprised there's that much hurt over a post that was very obviously a joke. I've got my own material to worry about. I'm sure Squig is gonna be just fine.

Oh I remember that thread, I lurked about. Amusing it's always the same names popping up with the same arguing/discussion dynamics...

Dude... I was thinking the SAME thing... amazing how much has and has NOT changed in nearly four years. LoL....

Kholi, you're my hero. So what's next a D4 or a 1DX?. The D800 is for pussies.

Seriously was only ribbin ya, man.

Neither for me, C300 if I had money to throw away. GH2 Hack is still pack-leading IMO and the only thing that's gonna get me to switch is Full Frame 4/5K or an obvious increase in DR. Otherwise, just end up grabbing the Epic for anything super serious. Even then, I'm still on the fence about shooting the next feature GH2 Hack or Epic.

About to sell this 5DMKII, any buyers? :B

Edit: oh and Nikon does deserve some sort of award for managing the rolling shutter. I'd like to see some side-by-sides with Epic and Alexa. It's pretty impressive, though.

Yeah I know but not everybody here knows us and now you're a mod so people might actually think you know what you're talking about.

I'm starting to have painful 5D GH1 decision flashbacks.

I'm hoping to have funding in place to start shooting the feature in July. I did some test shots with the 5D and it clearly isn't up to the task. The Alexa is the benchmark for me, I really want those 3 extra stops but in a smaller, lighter, cheaper package. The C300 is a contender but I'm hoping that the 1DX or the D4 can cut it. The Nikon rolling shutter looks good but moire and aliasing could still be an issue. A GH2 would end up costing me more than a C300 given all the extra lighting and setup time I'd need. One thing that really bugs me is none of them except the FS100 do 60p 1080p!

Rumour has it the MKIII will be announced in a few weeks but I suspect the 1DX will be better for video.

I'm gonna have an editor working on set cutting prores files from a ninja on a macbook with fcpx so a clean HDMI feed is essential. I'm gonna be shooting a lot with 2 cameras so the D800 could work as a b-cam with the D4 or alternatively a C300/1DX and MKIII combo.

=P Just rent an Alexa then, o'course. Although I guess in two more years everyone really will be able to get everything for nothing. That's inevitable. Two to three more stops of DR (basically an Alexa) for 2.5K... not too far away.

Extra lighting? I haven't needed any kind of extra lighting shooting with a hacked GH2 during the real jobs I've done with it. Going into two more soon. The same package you'd use for a C300 would be the same you'd use for a GH2, or any of these DSLRs to be honest.

I suppose if people were talking about only shooting under moonlight then yeah. haha. C300 does that pretty well. I could go out with four litepanels or similar, a hacked GH2, and really not have anything to worry about if that's what the budget was to begin with. What's more important for any of these cameras is having the right grip to flag, scrim, net, bounce, so on and so forth.

We've reached a point where everything is TOO FREAKING SENSITIVE for normal shooting. Normal meaning not under street lamps or moonlight or available light in a boarded-off condemned warehouse.

Now it's a pain in the freakin' back to try and control and shape light. Ideally, the smart producer would have a lowlight king for extreme measures (C300, F3 SLog to SxS) and something slower for everything else.

Rental in Australia is not an option. Way more expensive than it is in the US. 20-30 days rental buys you the camera.

Even the 5D was struggling to get the shots I wanted in the subway. The DOF was too shallow in the available light at @ 1250 ISO and there was too much separation between the actor and the background. Something with D3s/FS100 sensitivity could have nailed it but the GH2 might have worked too. An extra 2-3 stops gives you a lot more control over the DOF without the need for a lot of extra light. The D800 looks like it has a stop or so over the 5D. The D4 and 1DX look like 2-3 stops or more in ISO sensitivity. Check out these 1DX samples http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/samples/eos1dx/

A heliopan vari ND solves the overly sensitive issue....shame we can't get one for your mouth. :nads:
