D50 or D70

I know asked many times, but im not asking which to buy really, just asking to clear p some stuff from the homework i've been doing on these two.
Ok so im not new to photography, i've been shooting film for a good amount of years now. What im looking for is a camera that will still give me that classic "film look" to it.
and im kinda of a shalow DOF junkie.
So i read up on the the two Nikons and see that both have the same Mpixals with different options to offer.
So i read that the d50 doesnt have a dof preview. Is that regarding the lcd or viewfinder? because i can deal with it just on the view finder, or does it not have one at all?
Another thing is the d50 doesnt seem to have an option for a remote flash, not that i see, am i right?
and is the lense on the 70 far grater than the 50?
Any recomdation on what lense i should go with based on what im looking for?
Thanks everyone.

When I looked at these two cameras, before the decision was made for me, I had a couple of the same questions. I will do my best from an amateur point of view to answer as objectively as possible.

1. What im looking for is a camera that will still give me that classic "film look" to it.
and im kinda of a shalow DOF junkie.
-They both have the same sensors, so there is no DOF difference. In fact, the DOF is determined by the lens not the camera.
2. So i read that the d50 doesnt have a dof preview. Is that regarding the lcd or viewfinder? because i can deal with it just on the view finder, or does it not have one at all?
-It refers to the viewfinder. As you should know, in an SLR you don't preview on the view screen like a point and shoot digital camera. You look through the view finder and control the shutter that way. The no DOF preview isn't 100% accurate either because you are looking through the lens.
3. Another thing is the d50 doesnt seem to have an option for a remote flash, not that i see, am i right?
-From what I understand it doesn't work with the remote wireless flashes, but it does have a shoe so you can use a bounce flash and it works with the i-TTL flashes.
4. and is the lense on the 70 far grater than the 50?
-I assume you're talking about the kit lens. The kit on the D70 is a much better and more expensive piece of glass, but is it worth the extra $300? When I was going to purchase I didn't think so (but once again, the decision was made for me). At the end of the day, if I was going to go out and purchase I would just get the body with a 50mm 1.8 and be happy with that for a while and come out with better, faster, and prime glass rather than the kit lens that comes with the D50. The D70 does have nicer glass, but once again, I would most likely just buy the body.
5. Any recomdation on what lense i should go with based on what im looking for?
-Well that depends. Remember with photography you move rather than move the camera. Zoom and telephoto isn't always required because you can get as close as you want. With a prime 50mm lens you can get real shallow DOF. Then again, you could always do what people do with the DVX and just shoot on the long end of a telephoto and get good DOF. DOF is always there in photography as long as you know how to take photos.

Hope this helps, but if not let me know what else I can answer. Then again, I might not be the right person to answer anything especially when there are so many great photographers here.

The last time I was in Costco, about a week and a half ago, they had a package deal on the D50 which looked like a good buy. It included the camera and TWO (telephoto?) lenses for around $700-800.

Thanks everyone the info is very helpful.
Yankee, you answerd all my questions perfectly, thanks.
Cmessineo, i actually read that review before and i still couldnt choose lol.
A factor i forgot to mention is im not paying for the camera. The job im working now is going to pay for what i need.
So i was trying to pick from getting the cheaper d50 with another lense and a tripod.
Or a d70 with either a lense or tripod or remote flash.
The 50mm prime lense sounds like what im looking for though so at least i know what lense i have to get now.
:)

i read lots of reviews before choosing and i decided on the D50 and i love it, here are some pics, and as far as the 2 u can get almost identical pictures, but the d70 is more technical and has a few more helpful nooks and crannies like DOF preview and what not, but the D50 fulfills my needs and then some

Great photo emerecia!
Funny, im buy this camera to take with me to japan because im moving there and you happen to be there.
Im a little confused as to what this dof preview function is. Im leaning towards the d50 with 50mm prime lense and tripod.
Is 50mm prime lense the technical name for it? cuz i cant find it on bh's site.
can the d50 use a wireless flash?
Thanks a lot everyone for the feedback.

The D50 seems like a great deal--a whole lotta camera for the money.

You can find fast Nikon prime lenses all day long on eBay for less than $100. And if you have a Redrock M2 with Nikon mount, you can also use 'em on your DVX. :)

Lol, oh yeah. Thanks.

So i think i've made my choice!
Think im going with
-D50
-wireless flash (will this work on a d50?)
-50mm prime lense
-and a tripod

But i cant find a place that has everything :(
I live near BH so i was hoping they have everything on thier site but i dont see it.

What can't you find at B&H?

That place is huge and usually has everything I am looking for.

Ok found everything, sorry :)
But will the wireless flash work on a d50?
Everything is coming out to be cheaper than i thought, i may get the d70 just for the heck of it lol.
I have no idea about the wireless flash sorry.

If you have extra money, you might want to get a couple more lenses.

Chris

The extra lenses are a must and the #1 reason to get a DSLR. I am starting to build a very broad collection of cheap lenses that are meeting my needs for right now.
