D40 lens compatibility

My wife has a Nikon N 60 with a fairly new Sigma 70-300 AF lens. I would like to get her a new D40, but am unclear as to whether her lens will focus or not with it.
Anyone know for sure?

For the D40, D40x, and D60...you can mount just about any lenses Nikon has made in the last 50 years...including the really old AI and non-AI lenses.

The camera will only AF with lenses that have a motor built in them. On her N60, the Sigma lens uses the AF motor that is built into the body of the camera. The cameras listed above do not have that motor, so it will not AF. You can tell by looking at the electrical contacts on the lens mount. If it has no contact, then that means there is not metering chip or AF motor in the lens. If it has 5 contacts (one, then some space between it and the other 4), then that means it has a metering chip, but still will not AF (even if it will AF on the N60). If it has 10 contacts, then it means that it has the metering chip and the AF motor in the lens. Nikon calls it AF-S and Sigma calls it HSM, Tamron calls it IF if I'm remembering correctly.

Remember also, that if you are buying a lens to work with both cameras that it must not be designed only for digital. If you get one of those by mistake and try to use it then you will see quickly that you have very bad vignetting on the film. Some older film cameras might not AF with the newer lenses, but the N60 is new enough it should work just fine with all of the current lineup (as far as AF goes).

Wow, a lot of conflicting info today. Salesman at Best Buy: "D40 and D60 won't auto focus with your lens, higher models will". Salesman at Wolf: "D60 will auto focus, D40 won't".
Then I read a blurb about the D50 being the last entry level camera with focusing motor built in. Is that correct?
