D-Cinema & Popcorn

If you were invited to exhibit your latest zero-budget movie at a D-CINEMA near you, would you take popcorn or what?

There are no D-Cinemas within 500 miles of where I live, but (by the time I've finished editing my 90 MINUTE COMEDY FILM sometime next year) this situation could change. I'm thinking ahead and wondering what I'll need to have with me when we all stumble gracefully from out stretched limousine.

What is a D-Cinema exhibition print?
Is it called a Digital-Out?
How is aspect ratio dealt with?
How is the audio dealt with?
Is it something I can do for myself?
Does it cost an arm and a leg?

I'm presuming it couldn't possibly be something as domestic as a Blu-Ray disc or anything else that might be accessible to someone with limited cash. So, what do I need to know and how do I go about it?

Actually, what is D-Cinema, is it like your local art house with a screen and some chairs? I'm also curious about this.

To answer some of your questions, I would think the only print you would need is a DVD copy of the film. As far as the technicall stuff, don't know. And I would say it depends on how many people you plan on having, I got a price quote of $700 for a 200 room seating with a decent size screen.

Your best friend is the internet, google some stuff in your area and get answers, I see you're in Spain, so things might be different there..

and as for the Popcorn, no need for it, have people bring in whatever they want, you might be stuck cleaning but atleast if ur movie sucked(joking), they can enjoy the food. Nothing worst then stale popcorn in a bad movie. But if ur movie is good, the food will make it much more enjoyable.

A tip: Make sure you invite people who can benefit you, not just your buddy's next door.

Sorry. I presumed most people here would know that commercial cinemas have already begun to replace there opical projectors with digital projectors. The technology is known as D-Cinema. Movies will be distributed as digital files - not in cans of 35mm film. The cost savings will be enormous and may eliminate the need for people like us to pay for a Film-Out to be printed. Digital-Out is a word I made up.

Naylor? I just met her!
It is possible that anyone could come back with something intelligent to say?

ha ha, how well does that dolly work? That thing looked like serious business!!!
The picture of the dolly was the prototype, but it actually worked rather well. The total cost was 65 euros. After giving it a coat of paint and a few minor alterations, we did some more tests with a couple of actors. Not quite up to Panther standard, but very useful and certainly better than not having one at all. Thanks for looking at the Wrinkly Film web site, but I was hoping you might reply with some useful comments to do with the topic - D-Cinema.

Well frankly your question is not very worthy of a response. Anything said here would be purely speculation. Why don't you contact a D-Cinema and ask them what they would require?

I really thought my original questions relating to D-Cinema were relevant to independent film makers. All I have in response so far have nothing to do with the subject. A snipe at my humble attempt to make a dolly and a reference to my name, which I don't understand. Perhaps someone could explain why this subject and my questions are not worthy of a response.

Look up the DCI spec. That's what most of them require. At my local D-Cinema, if you're playing back from their servers, they want an MXF wrapper on something that's been compressed with the JPEG 2000 codec. There are a bunch of resolutions they can take it at, but they generally used 2k (either 16x9 or scope). They also have an external scaler that you can just plug your laptop into. Alternatively, you could burn an HD-DVD and have them play that back (my local D-Cinema has an Xbox 360 with HD DVD addon).

Well, you did ask your question in the Cafe-ala-DVX, the place where we 'yap about whatever we want'. Perhaps your question, posed in the appropriate section of the forum would be met with better responses.
