I shot a commercial on 35mm and I send in the film to the lab and they scanned it in on a D-5 tape. I've got a D-5 deck, but I want to downrez it to an HD thats more manageable bit rate for FCP

Any ideas of how to do this?
 
Should be able to ingest straight from your d5 deck into FCP. Use any form of prores 4444 or 4:2:2 HQ.
 
Set up the project as ProRes first and then capture it?

I've never worked with data files with this ridiculous amount of bit rate
 
You can try a method I use for down converting HD to dvd:

-Open FCP and create a new project > sequence
-Right click on the sequence in the browser and set the settings to match whatever you want
-Any footage you the capture into FCP you can drag into this new sequence and FCP will automatically resize the footage for you. If a pop up asks to make the sequence fit the clip size say no.
