Cyclic redundancy error

hi

I have a problem. I have been given a video to edit by my friend, he has burnt the raw .avi files to DVD for me (three in fact). None of the disks are scratched or dirty. however i can't copy the files off the DVD onto my pc, i get a "Cyclic redundancy error", other DVD's and CD's still work and i can copy data fine.

does anyone know how to fix this, is it because of the file size. I have tryed the disks in my housemates computer and they do work. so i don't think it's the disks or the hard ware in my machine because i have tryed it with my drive (about 3 years old but never had a problem till now) and one of my friends DVD drives, and his is only about a month old. however my house mate won't let me open up his machine and get the drive out because its "too new to be opened and messed about". I definitely have enough space for the files because i still have 100GB free space.

thanks for any help

Is your hard drive Fat 32? There is a file restriction with the Fat32 format. Maybe your house mates drive is ntfs, which has no restrictions. How big are the files? I think the fat32 restriction is 2GB, maybe someone else will chime in.

A CRC error is typically associated with an inability to read a file sector. The discs that you received are they -R, -R/W, +R or +R/W flavor? Often, the rewritable discs are the first to exhibit problems when an OPU (Optical Pick Up) reaches end of life (anywhere from 1000 - 3000 hours typical). Your drive may just be exhibiting the first signs of being at its end.
