Doug - you are somehow the one exception to the rule!

Ive always commented you are good at focus.

I really struggle .. but it is with a certain thing.. which tends to be cheeks - ie just nibbling the focus on an IV.

Actually, shooting with a fast lens wide open makes focusing easier, not harder. 99% of everything I shoot is done with the lens wide open.

But the fact is a 1080 monitor, especially with some gack around the edge only shows you 1/4 of what is being recorded.

I grade and edit 4K video every day in post with HD monitors. No big deal. Having higher resolution for monitor is rarely needed. And I doubt that having a 4K viewfinder will make any difference to my ability to track focus. I'm not saying I don't want a 4K viewfinder, I'm just saying I don't NEED a 4K viewfinder. Either the subject is in focus or it is not.

I wonder if you have ever used a decent viewfinder or if all your prejudices come from working with junk? Also, do you really know how to configure peaking? Do you have any experience with edge-enhance peaking control, rather than the colored junk you see on some cameras? Having great peaking makes all the difference in the world, and I must say that is one area where the Zacuto EVFs beat the Sony EVFs. So many options for customizing.

It is my opinion that using any 1080 device to focus you will strugle when recording 4k footage. You need..

-A 4k viewing device that does not exist
or
high quality 'punch in' that does not exist
or
to use AF
or
a tape measure, time and calibrated lenses

Arri do this really nicely with a 1:1 pixel zoom on their evf/lcd that's coming straight from the sensor (rather than a magnification of an HD signal to said evf).

Makes it SO much easier to confirm focus. And you can do it mid-take if need be, and send it to whichever monitoring outputs you want (including to a specific SDI port you might be using for an onboard 5"/7" monitor). Which means you can send a regular monitoring feed out to video village, but still have the luxury of sensor-level focus zoom on any onboard monitoring that the operator is using.

If only more manufacturers would follow their lead!
