Cutting on a blank expression

I remember in film school a professor talking about an experiment where they intercut different scenes with a shot of a man with a blank expression on his face. Depending on what they intercut, people said they saw the man showing different emotions on his face. So if they showed a baby then the man he was expressing compassion, if they showed a war scene he was expressing anger, etc.

I'm trying to find an article or something about it, does anyone know if I'm not crazy.

Thanks guys. I wonder how people here have reacted to this experiment. It seems to me the effect would be less pronounced on today's more sophisticated audiences.
