Cutting a Music video - Effects

I’m getting ready to shoot a music video for some friends. I’ve been editing on Premiere 6.5 & sometimes on 1.5. My main question here is I see a lot of flash transitions, blurs, and other effects on a lot of music videos posted in the Clips forum. I want to know where I can get a good tutorial on cutting a music video with these effects. Will I need stuff like Trapcode or AE to do the effects or are there some preset transitions and effects in Premiere 1.5 or Vegas, or FC? Are there any special music video effects plugins?

I’ve scoured through the forum looking for pointers and I’ve found some decent ones, but I just need something concrete, a good guide (especially on the effects). Since I’ve been doing documentaries, a music video is a whole new experience for me. I know what I want but some of it, I don’t quite know yet how to achieve. Any feedback will be appreciated.

The best thing that I can think of would be to purchase the Adobe Premiere 1.5 tutorial book (found on Amazon.com). There is literally a specific section on it about shooting and editing music videos :).

I don't think there is any way a book can tell you when to add a flash, cut, or dissolve. You need to listen to the song over and over again, then cut it as you are seeing it.

If you don't hate the song by the time you're done, you didn't listen to it enough :-)

also watch other music videos you like and that match the mood/pace/context of your song. and try to understand what's happening and isolate the effects you like and try to reproduce them with what you have

As far as *where* to put the effects, a book and no one on this forum can really help you alot. But, I can tell you a quick and easy way to make a flash at the end of a clip.....Here's what I do...I add a brightness and contrast adjustment to the clip, and keyframe a brightness and contrast boost at the end of the clip and then just tweak it until I have to look that I want. Sometimes cutting the clip where you have the keyframes and adding a speed boost looks cool too- it sort of gives it that film roll-out look.

Thanks for the replies. Strangely enough I ordered the Premiere book a while ago. A friend had borrowed it and looks like I have to get it back.

Like I said, I know what I want. I’ve been watching plenty of MVs without sound (that helps me observe the techniques used better) and I know the effects I want to use and where. My question is, do I have to recreate the techniques from scratch (which I don’t mind doing but in the case of this particular MV I’m really really pressed for time) or are there plug-ins I can use with presets?

I can use AE to recreate a couple of effects and PDX_DVX thanks for the tip, I’ll definitely try it out. I’ve heard of Trapcode and other software like that, do you recommend using them? Which ones are decent? Do you recommend instead sticking to particular transitions\effects from 1.5 and manipulating them? I feel really bad asking shortcuts...I really do. Feel free to tell me to quit it.

Trapcode is awesome in AE. I use Particular and Shine a lot.

There is also a sweet effect called 'camera flash' from Effect Essentials...it give that film burn effect you see a lot these days.

Good luck, and post it up for us when you're done!

Thanks WadeSpenser. I looked up the Effect Essentials package and I liked what I saw. Thank you also for the encouragement. If they let me post the video, I will.

can anyone tell me what site to go to that talks about effect essentials and where to get it
thanks

I think you should watch MTV and, get some ideas from those clips. you just need to use the "current cool effects" and also try some new effects.
