Cut on IMovie/Post in FCP?

Assuming one has to pay for editing bay time due to budget limits, could a cheap ass like me cut my film on FC Express or even IMovie and just do whatever correction/sweetening is in needed on FCP?

Apple has a web page that shows the difference of FCP to FCE.

FCP comes with Soundtrack (for music), LiveType for titles, Compressor for compressing clips, and a version of Peak for doing sound editing.

You can do basic editing with iMovie just fine and certainly a good and cheap way to start. It will even be fine with 24p mode (editing at 29.97) However there are restrictions on what you can do regarding layering video, editing sound, slipping sync, etc. You can do some rudimentry color correction and other things.

FCE has more functions for the $200-300(?)

If you have a Mac (or buy as used Mac) it probably has iMovie already. If not you can get it for $40 as I recall (with iPhoto, iChat and other progrms) Try it out and see if it works for what you need to do. It's fine for standard storytelling and is a good learning experience about basics of editing.
