Cut-down Workflow Suggestions

- 2 x 1 hour episodes to become a 90 min feature
- seam together, fix opening, fix transition, fix closing, fix couple other bits, cut-down

- Paying for 2 x 1 hour episodes to get full audio mix
- Do not want to pay for full mix of feature, which is entirely based on the already mixed materials from Ep1/Ep 2 minus the changes, which do want to OMF, EDL, and pay for mix

- 2 x 1 hour sequences have the lower thirds on them, want to leave those lower thirds in place for the feature cut-down

- Feature Sequence = Ep 1 Nest + Ep 2 Nest
- both nests simply trimmed to get time down
- then opening, middle, ending have actual fresh things cut in (these will require new audio mix)
- the feature sequence has sub-titles on it

System is quad core intel (2x3ghz), 4gb, Kona 3, eSata raid.
Boot drive and Raid drives are at under 60% used space.
Footage/Sequences = ProRes (no mixed timeline, its all in there the same)

Final Cut Pro renders + these nests = Living Hell
- when sub-titles cut out, the video actually displays the footage from when the sub-title started (but now w/o the title) until the next cut. So if you have a 10 sec shot, first 6 seconds are titled, the last 4 seconds will be a repeat of the first 4 seconds (but w/o the title). Total wacky refresh/render craziness here. And its not just a display thing, it will go to tape like that.
- sub-titles are render "green" only for so long, then hit the render red; does FCP have a frame count limit on real-time effects?
- FCP cache clogs up within 12-14 hours and then get into General Error 0 hell and have to close and re-open FCP
- Some changes in the 1 hour sequences carry through render files and all to the feature sequence, others just decide they don't need to (So we have to then cut that over to the feature sequence)
- Sometimes, at FCP's whim, after going into a nest to make a minor adjustment, come back out of the nest and ALL render files in the Feature sequence, related to that nest, are gone
- If FCP crashes and try to use an Auto-save, on-reopen using the auto-save project OR using the "restore" option in FCP, FCP then needs to reconnect to hundreds and hundreds of media files (or so it says) but if ignore that, the bins/timelines show no more than 10-12 offline, AND, ALL render file associations for all sequences lost (yeah!)
- Just more general fun stuff like this

I know most people say to avoid using Nests in FCP because Apple choses not to fix those issues, but there is no choice here. We can't copy and paste all the individual edits together from the two 1 hours as then we'll quickly lose track of the "changes" which exist in the feature (which need to be easily identifiable as the only parts requiring a fresh audio mix).

So if anyone has any workflow ideas or sees anything obvious that is causing FCP to freak out and have us calling the local Avid dealer, it would be appreciated.

Cheers.
