Customs, going overseas with my dvx?!

I'm going to Europe next week. I was wondering if I still needed custom papers, certificates, if travelling with the camera?

I can only speak for Western and Central Europe, but I see no reason it should be different anywhere else.

You don't need those as long as you can demonstrate that the camera is for your use only, and you are taking it back with you to US or Canada (assuming that's the case). If it's been unpacked and obviously already used, nobody in Europe will care. I've done it many times and nobody EVER asked me about the camera.

Returning to North America, it helps if you have a copy of your bill of purchase - if you can show customs you've bought it here, they will leave you alone. In Canada, they have a 'temporary export permit' but it's useless if they decide to pick on you and you don't have the original receipt - speaking from a personal experience. The bottom line - take a copy of your receipts with you. Make sure serial numbers are included.

If you've imported the camera (which sometimes happens when Canadians purchase in the US), make sure you have a receipt showing that local sales tax was paid when it was originally imported. This probably doesn't apply if you live in the US.

Right on. Thanks. I'll make sure I take the receipt.
No, take a copy. In case you lose it, you can always get another copy if you leave the original at home.

And yes, some sort of insurance is good, especially if you travel to Eastern Europe where thieves and pickpockets rule the streets in tourist areas. Local police is of no help. Beware of Gypsies (sorry for the politically incorrect statement, but it's true).

Once you get out of tourist hotspots, you can relax.

Where are you going?

I'm going back home to my town in the south of france. Just for vacation (even tho I'm not done with my current projects). I just want to take the camera and shoot some nice stock footage down there.
I'll be miles away from the tourist hotspots.
And thanks for the other tips, I'll make sure I take a photocopy.

Oh - so you are familiar with where you are going! Have a great time, and don't forget to share some grabs and clips when you get back!

a very common plan indeed
the future feature....
but who is one without goal.
it will happen
it will!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and when it does
i can die happy
unless it sucks bad
then i'll die from my own hands because i could not measure up to my planned goal
