Custom Transition In After Effects, creating custom transition

I found this tutorial and it says After Effects users can perform a similar effect like Animatte. I have tried to follow along, however the screenshots are from AVID so it lost me. Was wondering if somebody could shed some light on creating this particular effect using AE 6.5 instead of Avid Animatte. Thanks for any help.

Really easy, actually... you'd create a duplicate of the first clip, in which the package comes into view. Layer this on top of the original, set its in-point to where you want the transition to begin. Draw a mask around the box using the pen tool. Now you can layer the second clip underneath the first and animate the first however you want to do the reveal. Here they are also doing a radial blur on the 2nd clip as it comes in.
