Custom Focus/Iris remote

I am thinking about making a new Focus/Iris remote for my HVX200 but being a neophite camera user I wondered if some of you all could help answer a few questions that I have. First off I have already made a simple unit and it works just fine for regular control but I was wondering how much benefit it would be to have a system where there were multiple adjustable focus points that were switchable, say 3 in quantity. Would this be useful or just overkill? Let me know what you think.

Fixed focus points will be great.
If you or anyone else could build a progammable remote that could remember focus and zoom movements, that would be even greater. I remember a Sony hdv cam that can program such movements. Not impossible for a remote, but of course not simple.
