I am wanting to get a new laptop for editing. Im looking for a pc based platform for running Premier Pro, After Effects, and Photoshop.
Ive found http://www.alienware.com, but reviews for the 15 inch machine are not very encourageing. I have a budget of up to $2100 for the laptop.
Any others? IVe googled but I dont want to review 1000's of sites, most of which are not reputable.

Thanks,
JD

im not sure that I would use a laptop as an edit machine, but as a secondary tagalong machine, im sure that any new core 2 duo with 2GB or more of ram and a firewire port wil run CS3 just fine. just check over the specs on adobe.com and be sure that they dont need anything tedious like a certain chipset on the grapohics card or anything if its mobile card ect. ect. , but most likely just about any decent newer machine would work fine.

Laptops NOT for continuous use

Laptops NOT for continuous use

Laptops are NOT made for continuous use or as a replacement for a desktop machine imho. They are for people on the move who need short time connectivity.

For serious work like editing, the last thing you want is for the laptop to die before you finish the project. Learn from my recent experience.

I bought an expensive (over £1000) Acer model 1501LMI laptop 3years ago and it suddenly died recently without any warning signs. The repair shop have said their initial findings indicate it has overheated and if they cannot fix the motherboard (they carry out repairs at component level) a replacement mobo would cost £250/£300 before any labour or other components are added to the costs. If that turns out to be the case, it is clearrly an uneconomic repair and I will not be replacing it with another laptop as my use is mainly at home.

It appears that laptops are bespoke products unlike their desktop equivalents, so in the main, you cannot buy anything other than the original makers replacement components and pay whatever price they deem fit as their is no competition.

So for real heavy work like video editing forget laptops and buy a proper desktop computer that you can get repaired cheaply and easily.
