Currently have SD Mixpre/NTG-2/DR-100 - Another $1000 towards Audio - Guidance needed

Hey guys,

I have an OK set-up for narrative film at the moment, but for the film we're working on at the moment we have just under $1000 still set aside for audio only. We really want the best our money can buy.

Are there any suggestions that you may have? We'd need to keep the mixpre but we're open to the idea of part exchanging the DR-100 and Mic for a better quality versions (if the budget allows it).

Cheers,

Lewis

Add a NTG3 and a Lav

Also trade out your NTG2 for a hyper.

Cheers.

The NTG3 has been on our purchase list for quite a while.

Do you have any brand suggestions for the Lav and Hypercardioid mic?

I take it the DR-100 is OK for a field recorder? It's done us pretty well so far. Taken a few knocks too.

Get the Rode Lav and an a Oktava Mk012 with propper shock mount and a baby ball gag (seriously) look it up on B&H website.

Cheers

The MixPre into a DR-100MkII (@+4dB balanced line in) sounds almost as good a SD 700 series recorder. All things being equal.
See my comments about the Oktava Mk012 mic elsewhere in this forum.

hope I wont be seen as a intruder/hijacker, it does go into the OP's direction, though :)

Soo. . . the dr-100 stays? Would you buy it again or is there something thats better but still in the same price-range?

NTG3 is superb i heared and if you want something better they say "you'd need a to go beyond 1000$+ to get a better mic"
Oktava's somehow got a cult following ^^ great quality, though would you say there is nothing better in this price-range?
For the lav, check out this post:

the second post, guy seems to know what he is talking about, and I like how he puts "price-ranges" so one can pic :)

and about the mixpre, would you guys suggest going mixpre-d today if you had the chance or buy a used mixpre ?

[whats a hyper gonna give ya?
shotgun (like NTG) would be dangled down for pole to get audio from actors or in an interview. If that dont work (wideangle lens, space issues) use a lav, right? Is it "that easy"?
Would love a simply link to a page that explains all this in-depth ]

What is the nature of the film? I get you want to upgrade - but I think the money should be spent on making the movie better. Is it outdoors mainly? Indoors mainly? I think that should drive what you are buying. What do you have for headphones? You have a good boom pole I am assuming. Even if you swap out to an NTG3 do you have a good blimp already? The thing about the NTG3 is that it can do double duty (interior and exterior). Wireless would be great, but since you are on a 2 channel, you could only use one wireless (unless you do that emergency extra channel thing - which I don't fully understand). So you are going to wire only one actor at a time. Most people seem to swear that you get the best audio by booming. But that affects the framing of the shot and how wide you can get. Which leads to how long is your boom pole? And the quality of the mic (some obviously can get goog audio further out). Anyway, I am a little tired so I apologize for the rambling.

Thanks Rick R, I'll check out your comments now. Recordingwhiz, thank you for your help, I'll price up those suggestions now.

Prexdealer. This our project - Grim - We'll be filming EXT/INT, we'll have scenes with just one actor and scenes with 20 horses plus 50 actors. It's kind of across the board with what is going on. We have a 3 meter boom pole and two blimps.

+1

Exactly my kit. NTG3, Rode lav and a MK012.

I switched to record in camera when ever possible (with a field mixer of course), since the recorder part of my FS100 is on par with most recorders, as long as you don't use the camera's pre-amps.

Saves me a ton of time and hassle with syncing.
Actually I always wonder, why a lot of guys still record separate.
