I want to know how everyone educated themselves in this field... Whether it be by school, private hobby, forums such as thses, etc.

How did YOU learn what you know now??? How long have you been doing it for? What are you getting out of it?

Just wondering how everyone learned the things they did.

I have always loved writing, although mostly in short story form and poetry. Recently I beame interested in the filed of screen writing and around the same time sicovered this forum. I began to use it more frequently and actually learned a lot. Using what I got from her, and what I learned from private practice, I offered do write scripts for people.

I now have a few films in the making (many for TimeFest) and am working on getting in on more areas of filmmaking. I am hoping that by having my name out there I will eventually be able to move on to paying jobs.

I am also an actor and would like to try my hand at composing as I enjoy playing the piano. Some other oddball things in this field I do are things that have to do with Photoshop (posters, logos, etc) That's about it, I hope it will be more some day soon. Good topic.

 Cheers,

I did a one year filmmaking course that kinda threw us in the deep end, it was great. shot 16mm twice (1 short, 1 mock commercial) and a 35mm short (which I was lucky enough to write/direct). Cost nothing compared to uni and I personally think I got 10x more hands on experience.

For writing - a mate got me into it and the internet was my best friend. Download heaps of scripts as well as finding pages about how to format etc.

DVXuser is now my filmmaking course. I love this place and I read about a lot of tech stuff, even if it's for something I may not use in a thousand years.

The key is being motivated and looking to learn wherever you can find info.

My personal path:
Apple FCP book
Advanced video class in college
HVXUSER!!!
lotsa Googling
HVX manual and Barry's book
try stuff and see what works
Apple Shake book
Shoot whenever possible and try to do an excellent job each time
Ask friends but don't bother them too much.
Steve Wright's digital compositing book
a couple of lighing classes at filmarts.org
paying attention to light in everyday life
volunteering to do projects for people
be willing to admit when you're wrong and learn from it.
NETFLIX!
think about making each project something special, unique, convincing, smart.
don't sleep

I've been doing it now for 2 years, and I've been in 8 festivals,
and I realize that I know very very little. I'll always be a beginner.

I have probably learned more about filmmaking by watching movies then anything else.
I've made a few movies, found out what I liked and what I did not.
Books.
DVD features, sometimes extra features are lame but sometimes they have invaluable tidbits of info.
I took a 6 month film making class on saturday mornings at Miami Children's Museum back in 2004-2005.

Future-plans

This summer I will be attending a week long corse at NYFA.
Eventually I plan on going to USC or UCLA for film.
Continue making and watching films.

-Stupid films with friends
-Practice
-Better stupid films with friends
-DVXuser
-Better stupid films with friends
-Practice
-Slightly less stupid film with actual actors

That's about it.
