Curiosity about 16:9

Greetings everyone,

I'm just curious why so many people like the 16:9 format. I understand that it's the widescreen appeal. That's a no brainer! Why not some other aspect ratio though? Is it just because HDTV is 16:9 and therefore people do it for compatabilitys sake?

I personally don't find 16:9 exceptionally attractive. I'm a fan of wider images. Around 1:2 and up (nothing more than 2.66 though and even that gets a bit too wide for my taste at times).

Anyone else feel this way?

It's too bad that cameras such as the DVX (which are targeted to the indie arena) don't have some form of internal 2.35 or something. Maybe once we get a 16:9 DVX?

I too prefer the wider image. I think 16:9 is a just happy medium someone decided to make standard for various reasons. Movies in 2:35 on a good size TV or projector just rock

Re: Curiosity about 16:9

As for the DVX100 doing something like 2.35:1 its an issue of lensing. It is a completely different type of lens that cannot be made affordable at this point to the DVX100 demographic.

Re: Curiosity about 16:9

I'm not sure I agree about the lens not being possible at this price point. Heck I'm making an adapter for a DOF system that creates a 2.35 image and I'm not spending all that much.

If panasonic were to create a lens system that would create a 2.35 image on the DVX the problems would arise when 1) trying to create a zoom and 2) you wouldn't be able to shoot any other aspect ratio.

However, by a 2.35 mode I was meaning something like built in guides or letterbox.
