Cubase and Midi help?

Just got cubase sutdio case II yesterday. I hooked up my usb midi keyboard controller when I hit the keyboard keys I can see midi in/out levels move but not audio output levels move in cubase? Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong.

thanks

You need some sort of synthesizer to generate the actual audio. The USB keyboard is simply a controller which inputs the midi signal, not audio.

There's a couple of VST instruments you can use, just activate them and set the output on your MIDI channel to the instrument. Alternatively your soundcard probably has a built in synthesizer, just peruse the outputs on the channel while playing the keyboard and see if any make some noise.

There's other ways, such as using ReWire with Reason, and lots of other apps too.

That makes more sense. I did add a vsti to it halion but I got no sound ( last night) but I probally just didn't properly set up the ins/outs for midi. Setting output for midi channel that would be within cubase right?

Thanks for the help.

Yea, on the left just under where your MIDI In is set, just change the output from 'Your USB Controller' to 'Halion' or whichever you use.

Some MIDI controllers do have on-board synths though. So check on the back to see if there's a headphone jack, or audio outputs. If so, set each of the Cubase MIDI tracks outputs back to the USB controller.

Thanks my input should be usb audio controller right and output my "vsti". Then on my midi track my output is either my soundcard or usb controller or am I way off?

thanks

I'm having the internet re-connected at my house so I can't take a screen and post it directly, but I found this to help...

Using VST Instruments
in: should be USB Controller
out: should be 'VST Instrument'

Using USB Controller's Synth (If it has one)
in: should be USB Controller
out: should be 'USB Controller'

Using Soundcard's Synth (If it has one)
in: should be USB Controller
out: should be 'Soundcard [Emulated]'

Thanks I actually got it working on friday :) thanks for the help thoe. There is just a slight delay when I play that is only problem.
