CSI Lighting

Maybe the finished result is SR since it's broadcasting over SD in most of the places it plays but it could very well be processed in HD. Most shows these days, 24 included are posting in HD and transferring a final copy to SD. It's easy to guess why they're doing it that way. Anyone imagine a future "HD" version boxset?

Here they mention it is mastered on a D5 deck:

D5 is a panasonic format that can be used either for uncompressed SD or compressed HD. So hard to tell but since we see the broadcast in 4:3 SD I would imagine that's what the master is. You can bet though all the networks are getting ready for HD and are already gearing up workflows for future episodes being mastered and broadcasted in HD. It's not that far off...

35mm production - HDCamSR post. SR is currently Sony's highest-quality commercially-available HD format.

actually, I always felt the flashbacks screamed of 8mm to me.

I knew the shows weren't video simply because of highlights are so rich and not blown the way video does.

I just assumed it was 16 because of cost savings and because it is used so much for music videos, since the small screen doesn't really get much more from 35 than from 16. Maybe it was the pilot that was shot on 16, I don't know and it doesn't really matter. Point is that film works much better that type of lighting than video.

No there's no cost savings. At one site I saw their budget listed as 1.2m per episode. They were actually losing money in the first few years. It wasn't until they started showing in other markets outside the USA they started to recoup their investment.

From what I've seen of CSI, if you turn off every single light within a 1km radius of your shoot - you should get a similar effect to their lighting setup

I'm not surprised the lead actor says he's going blind, who can see anything on those sets!

That's why they are always walking around with flashlights
