CS6 aweful playback on newest MacBook Pro... what I'm doing wrong?

Hi Guys!

I import GH2 1080p 17Mb/s footage (about 24min long) into Premiere Pro CS6

PROBLEM: Playback is aweful, it "thinks" to long and JKL is just slow random slideshow...

When I render, (yellow line on the timeline becomes green) it all goes super-smooth...

I have newset update of MacBook Pro (non-Retina), 2,6 quad-core i7, 8 Gb RAM, nVidia GT 650M 1 Gb (with CUDA support in PP), 5400rtm 750 gb HDD and External Firewire800 HDD for all my scretch data.

This problem appers in both Lion and Mountain Lion, and swithcing between CUDA and no-CUDA doesn't affect this at all...

1/2, 1/4 playback - not effect at all

PP CS6 is last update, CUDA drivers - last update...

I adress this in the first place because I've read that lot of people have "uninterupted" playback on much earlier-generations Macbooks, WITH YELLOW "RENDER" LINE ON THE TIMELINE not saying about more powerful PCs...

I remember watching few youtube tutorials when guys on 2011 MBPs have absolutely uninterupted playback with RED futage and so on...

Do they all have 16Gb RAM and super-fast SSDs internal and external? I doubt so... So probably the problem is with my :hands:

Thank you all in advance, this value on your advices here on this board is huge for me!

Are you sure the CUDA cores are enabled? That is critical to good performance. It should show Mercury Hardware Acceleration under the Project properties I think.

If it is not an approved card, you will have to hack the text file to enable it.

I don't know what kind of RAM & CPU monitoring tools you have? Check CPU utilization & RAM utilization to see if either are a bottleneck. I doubt your drives are, as those would be 4th on the list:

1. CPU

2. RAM

3. GPU/CUDA cores

4. Drive speed.

I can say I don't have any of those problems on a plain vanilla, $500 Windows 7 laptop, with an i3 CPU, no GPU acceleration, 1 640 GB hard drive, and 8 GB of RAM.

But the amount of memory required/taken by the OS and other applications is going to be critical. Once you hit a wall there, you are swapping out to disk all of the time and things slow down in a major way.

Good luck!
Michael

Yea, Michael, CUDA is "on" for sure (at least PP said so) and yes I hacked text file for that in terminal...

Could you please elaborate more on how to do those "bottleneck" tests?... Witch software to use for this?

go to preferences and select media - set the usable RAM to maximum, go to sequence settings and click maximum render quality and maximum bit depth...

regards

Here's a method to determine if you are using the 'slow/lowpower' video card, or the higher performance card:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4152

Here's a procedure for selecting the higher performance video option:

http://serato.com/video-sl/support/5613/how-to-adjust-graphics-performance-for-the-macbook-pro

I'm going to be receiving my fancy new MBP... but this procedure worked for the Wife's older MBP when she was having some video play back difficulties for such things as Youtube and Vimeo... my current MBP is so old... it doesn't have this option at all...
