CS5 and Late 2011 Mac Book Pro - Workable? Efficient?

Hi,

I have a chance to get abode CS5 for pretty cheap. I have a MBP late 2011 edition. I am new to understanding editors, but it seems like CS5 won't be able to used efficiently because it wasn't designed for the graphics card in he mbp, right? My MBP has an AMD Radeon HD 6770M, which is on the approved list for CS6 just not sure if CS5 could use it.

I would like to edit natively and basically working on shorts. I am looking into upgrading to 16GB of RAM, will that help much?

I tried searching but whenever I search for CS5, I get mainly CS5.5 results, lol.

Thanks.

There are really not that many CUDA supported effects in CS5 so it just depends on what you are doing.
Probably worse for efficiency though is not having multiple drive array.
How much RAM do you have now? The difference between 8 gigs and 16 gigs probably wont make a huge difference.
If you have 4 gigs or less I would upgrade.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply! I have a 750gb HD at 5400rpm. Only 4gb memory. I am looking to upgrade to 16gb, an authorized dealer qupted me $170 bucks installed. So I think that is pretty good.

When speaking about multiple drive array (I searched online) you are speaking about an external drive to store files, etc?

Yesterday, I was trying to understand the impact of an external ssd and I think it is pretty cost prohibitive for me.

I found this link http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...-thread/page10&highlight=multiple+drive+array so I will study it for an external drive.

Thanks for the info.

I'm currently running CS6 on a late 2011 17" MBP and the one thing I recommend with Premiere Pro is max out the ram. Apple said max was 8GB (that's all they sell) but I went to Crucial and they supplied 16GB that works perfectly. Premiere Pro runs perfectly well without the CUDA stuff as long as you don't try to get over the top and expect to play in real time. For most things (including DSLR) it will play in real time at 1/2 res (which again, it's fine on an MBP screen!).

BTW - this is all running from the 750GB internal drive.

I'm guessing a 5400rpm HD might be problematic . . . but you'll have to give it a try.
This will likely be affected by how much you load up the timeline with effects & layers.
