CS4 question

Hi All

I might sound a bit stoopid on this, but i am an Edius user. I've bought Premiere Pro CS4. Installed it on a Quad Core, 4GB, NVidia machine. (Edius flys on this machine) No hardware card, just firewire in/out. I create a DV PAL Timeline, can capture DV PAL video. Pull the video onto the timeline and it works! As soon as i put a transition or effect on the clip, the software indicates that it should render by means of the RED line? IS this right? I cannot remember when last i had to render DV in Edius? ANd this is two clips with a crossfade between them???
I might be doing something wrong, can someone please advise.

Thanks in Advance

Premiere Pro doesn't have Native RT abilities like Edius does, however in SD a modern quad core machine should be able to play back those effects in real time.

The Red, yellow bars don't playback speeds in Premiere Pro since red means = "Clip with effects", and Yellow means "Clip with no effects, but not the native format of the timeline".

Make sure your timeline preview is in automatic quality, so that the transitions play in real time (it will usually switch to draft during red clips)

Yes, you will get the red line if you are using effects. With Premiere Pro 4 you can either loop through a DV camera or a DV converter to preview them on an NTSC monitor. In CS4 you can out put using the HDMI or S-Video of the grpahics card and it is just like looping through the camera. PP CS3 had much more realtime using this method. PP CS4 does not have as much RT as CS3. PP CS4 is still decent for RT previews but it is not true RT like Edius.

Thanks Allot for clearing this up. I'm sorry i even considered CS4 now. I cannot believe that something so basic is not possible, how can anyone even consider this to be a Professional edit package.
Many Thanks Guys, but it's back to Edius for me.

i noticed in earlier versions when you did a cross fade manually, the only red bits were the transition. Now with CS4 it requires you to render the whole clip. Defintely a huge step back for adobe.
