I just got a new desktop. It is a Del XPS 420 with Vista. It is a Quad core and have 4GB of Ram how do I change settings to maximize the the best performance with this program with it. When I open Premiere I notice it says 2GB isntead of 4. THe computer doesnt seem to be any quicker rendering than my 1 processor old computer. Any ideas? thanks

Go into the task manager and look at the performance tab. There will be a CPU box for each core you have. Are they all working while you are encoding?

As for the memory problem I can't help you there. Maybe check the same screen that shows the CPU usage and make sure total windows ram says 4000mb there could be something wrong with windows recognizing it.

Ok, did some looking. I had a 720p clip in the timeline. I pressed play and was running about 27.0 fps out of 59.94. The only effect added was the letterboxer from Magic Bullet. Out of my 4 processors, 3 are running about 50% and the other is running about 75%. My memory usage is at like 90% though. What I dont understand is that I am only using like 2.6 GB of ram and I am supposed to have 4GB. I have Vista32. With my computer, I should be rendering on the fly:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 @ 2.66 Ghz
4 GB ram
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+

This is so frustrating

You may need to look into the 64 bit version of windows. With that kind of system that is really what you should be running. I am not sure if it will solve all of your problems but I think it would help. I know the 64 bit windows uses large amounts of ram and multi-cores much better.

Very good points.

Also I think CS3 was written for 32 bit systems in mind so you may need CS4 to make full use of a 64 bit system.

Like Sony Vegas has Pro 8.1 for 64 bit processing.

64 bit is fast becoming the norm as it should have been but software makers have to write code to use all the 64 bit goodies.

I was told that 64 bit systems cant run a lot of programs. I am worried that all my other sofftware wont work if I switch.

That can happen....

Windows and I'm guessing Apple 64 bit systems have a folder that will hold most of the 32 bit apps so it's almost like a system inside a system.

I held off on moving to 64 bit system because of the "but my programs won't run" thing.

Most of my main ones do run on 64 but not all.
Like my Security Suite didn't have a 64 bit coding until just about a month ago....

It seems like the major apps will run but I use some smaller programs that will not install on a 64 bit system so I'm still using both 32 and 64.

I'll say this however will all things being the same between my two laptops [RAM, CPU and such] the 64 bit system is WAY FASTER.

A 32-bit system can only use 4 GB RAM max, including the RAM in the video card; your 9800GTX is 512 MB, yes?

That said, I have these exact components, and I use about 3.25 GB of RAM. Is your RAM DDR2 or DDR3?

Im not sure. Is there a way to check? How much is the upgrade to vista 64?

What about having 2 hard drives? one for vista 32 for software that wont work on 64 and one for 64? editing stuff on 64 and the other on the 32 one? would that be worth the hassel?

It sounds like you should have 2 computers if you still have a need for 32bit.

PROTIP: Vista Keys work in either 32 or 64 bit variants. Just find a disc image from a friend or online.
