CS3 Audio Skipping

I am on my work computer using CS3 for the fist time on this system. The computer is definitly fast enough to edit DV footage (2.8 pentium D, 2gb ram, 7,200 SATA) but it seems as though it's having trouble handling the audio. What are other possible causes?

If you're saying that the audio plays, then drops out, then plays again and repeats then this is an old news bug in CS3. I had that on my new editing station. It went away after I blew away the sound card in the hw manager and restarted PP while holding down the shift key. Ultimately the problem went away, but not right away. I'm not terribly certain that this procedure cured anything.

This problem is widely reported and I saw it on another machine last winter. All my perusing online resources has yet to turn up any significant data on what causes this.
