Crushing the blacks

So I shot some stuff with my 16:9 anamorphic lense. I also used the letterbox built in to my dvx to get that super wide look. My question is... how would I crush all the blacks when I'm done editing?.. mainly so that the letterbox lines don't stand out (as a lighter shade of black) when you view it on certain media players and tvs.

All you have to do is crop the black bars out.

But don't shoot letterbox in the first place. If you want wider than 16:9, just crop.

I thought the best way to shoot a cinescope (2.35:1) look was to use the anamorphic lense along with the built in letterbox. Does cropping cause a loss in resolution?

I know you're not supposed to do it this way if your plans are to transfer to film, but this project is going straight to dvd. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to get that 2.35:1 look.

Yes, there is resolution loss. Like David said, crop in post. You just need to be careful with your framing during shooting. Personally, I use black spray paint outside the safe areas on my lcd screen so I know the framing whilst shooting. Oh yeah, just kidding about the paint

There's no resolution loss in the image area. It's the exact same resolution.

It's not like cropping 4:3 and stretching it out to 16:9. It's already 16:9; you're just chopping off the top and bottom. The image area (between the black bars) is unaffected. It doesn't have to be stretched or uprezzed.
