Crushing blacks

Hi,

I've been experimenting with crushing blacks as it seems to be a good way to better the look of a video. In your opinion, what's the best tool in Premiere CS5 to do that?

Thanks!

The luma correction tool is your best bet if all you want to do is mess around with your highlights and shadows, and if you want to get more in depth there's luma curves tool aswell, but to be honest 90 percent of the time i find that the input and output levels in the fast colour corrector tool usually do the trick, especially if you just need to do a quick fix.

I vote you get started with Magic Bullet Colorista Free from Red Giant Software. It's a fantastic three wheel colour grading tool which will let you do a lot more than just crush the blacks. If all you want to do is crush them, grab the greyscale slider which circles around the shadows wheel and pull the position indicator toward black.

For quick crush-to-black using stock effects I recommend Fast Color Corrector, and the LEVELS section. You can eye-drop the areas you want black and the same for the whites then slide for adjustments. Sure Magic Bullet is my choice if you really want to get detailed, but for quick and easy black crush use Levels. I don't recommend CONTRAST because that just alters the RGB curve so it tends to oversaturate.
