Crossfade Issue

It's weird. Sometimes I'll use the crossfade transition and it'll give me a small little sliver. Anyone know how to get around this?

Sounds like you don't have enough handle room for the clip on the timeline. You either need to recapture with more handles (if any exist at all), or trim the clip forward a bit so that there is handle space for the transition. At least that's what it sounds like from your description. Good luck.

cheers.

I agree. Has happened to me in the past.

Or. Both things you are trying to dissolve are the same video information and FCP doesn't know how to dissolve to the same thing.

Yep, sounds like you don't have enough handle.

What you can do, though, is create your own crossfade by placing the clip you want to fade from above the clip you want to fade to, overlapping enough for the length of crossfade you want. Then use key frame markers and rubber band a fade out on your top clip. This will effectively give you a cross fade as your top clip fades to reveal the clip below it. Make sure that your bottom clip begins before your top clip starts to fade because you'll get a sudden bump of the incoming image otherwise.

You can also do this the other way around by placing your incoming clip above the outgoing clip and rubber banding a fade in, so that your incoming clip over-takes and eventually obscures your outgoing clip. Either way works pretty much the same.

May take some tweaking to get a smooth transition, but it will allow you to cross fade two clips that don't have enough handle.

I pretty much always use this method now because it gives me more control of the crossfade, and I especially use it when fading to or from still images that I've applied motion to. Something about the pre-set crossfade interferes with the motion and makes a little bump in the transition. Or so I've found.
