Crossfade Confusion

I am definitely a beginner, so please bear with me.
I bring up a clip to the timeline and snap it against the previous clip, then drag the starting edge of that event back across the ending edge of the previous event/clip to create a simple crossfade. When I do, I notice that the crossfade shows images starting at the ending of the event I just placed, not the beginning of it as I would expect. Its as if by dragging the front edge back, I am slipping the event inside of its boundaries. As a result the next clip starts at its ending then runs through the in piont I wanted. I'm having to re-edit the in point just to compenste for this and get a proper crossfade. Something has got set improperly here. Is there a setting that controls the behavior of the event boundaries?

Instead of butting the two against one another, drag the entire clip that is later in the timeline over the clip that is earlier in the timeline.

I like a lot of things about Vegas, but how it handles transitions like this, is NOT one of them. That is coming from Canopus and Premiere.

It't looping the event. You can turn that off (right-click the event, Properties, uncheck Loop), or do as said and drag the whole clip to overlap the previous one.

Just dragging the end (either end) will normally Loop like that (Or show footage that you've snipped out...since a non-destructive editor doesn't really snip anything). If you hold down the Ctrl and drag the end, it will stretch the event without looping, but that will slow the clip down. (Or speed it up, if you squish instead of stretch.)

There's probably a global setting somewhere to turn looping off for everything, but I don't know where it is...looping is a Good Thing in many cases, so I never bothered looking. :)

Remember, you can't transition over what isn't there. If you have a clip that begins exactly where you want the transition to END, you aren't going to be able to do a crossfade with it. You need to plan for a handle on the ends of your clips so that you have something to fade through.

Perrone, what do you see as the problem with handling transitions?

So it was looping inside the event!. At least my observations are confirmed.

By dragging up to the timeline and overlapping, it sounds like I can then slide the whole event to adjust the crossfade (once i've established in and out points). If my assumption is correct and I build clips in this manner, then go back somewhere to adjust or change a fade (by sliding an event) wouldn't that affect the next transition down the line?...and I would then have to adjust/slide the next event and so on?
Sounds like the looping function is the key. If an uncheck somewhere solves it, that would be perfect. Seems like it would be more practical to be able to adjust a crossfade anywhere in the timeline while maintaining transition points inside that event.

We'll see what happens when i get home from work.

Thank You Gentlemen!

In that case, you'd want to enable ripple edits. It will automatically slide everything down to the right, starting with the clip you move.

Keep in mind that if you disable looping, you will not be able to extend stills or title cards beyond their preset lengths.

So David are you saying that I cannot pull a crossfade ( I'm dragging beginning edge of new clip over ending edge of previous) without changing the in point of the next clip? ...and have to pick an in point that compensates for the length of the transition time?
I want one clip to fade DOWN TO its out point as the next clip comes UP FROM its in point. I want my in point to be what the fade starts from not finishes to. Can I pick an in point and drag a cross fade without changing the in point? Or is it standard procedure to pick an in point that compensates for a crossfade?

Then instead of snapping the ends of the clips together, you want to slide the second clip into the first clip, not drag the edge. Dragging the edge lengthens the clip.

I guess I was just VERY used to the idea of the A-B roll. After doing my first multi-scene, multi track project, I am MUCH happier. I just dislike the paradigm of dragging one clip on the same track over another. I can't "see" things as well that way. And I like seeing the transitoins defined on their own outside of the video tracks.

Again, personal preference, but it's just what I prefer.
