Hello,
I am working on figuring out a good method to crop 720p footage shot on my hvx to cinematic aspect ratios in Premiere. Specifically 1.85:1.
Now the method I've been using is create a canvas in Photoshop with resolution of 960x720 (hvx 720p footage resolution), then create a black letterboxing layer with an empty space of the size of 960x512 (1.85:1 aspect ratio) in the center.
I then import this Photoshop file into Premiere and put on the top layer of my timeline. Here's where things get strange and I don't know what's going on. The picture on my preview screen that is cropped does not look like 1.85:1! Somehow the black bars appear larger than they did in Photoshop (even though the aspect ratio interpretation is set to the same: 1.33)!
And then I go to export the footage. I use Adobe Media Encoder and after I crop off the letterboxing I resize the output footage to 960x512, which if the footage is in 1.85:1 would give me a perfect filled screen, right? Well, I get a completely squished footage!
After some experiementing I found that if I resized the output footage to 960x390 (after cropping off the letterboxing), I get a perfectly cropped picture. The only problem is, it's clearly not in 1.85:1 aspect ratio!
What's going on? My head's exploding!!!
(if anyone has a completely different method they use that works, then please let me know! I'm ready to not even bother finding a solution to my method if there's a completely different way)
Thank you.
