Cropping and the Anamorphic

Hey guys,

I'm shooting with Anamorphic adapter and would like to crop the footage down to 2:35:1 aspect ration--- Can anyone tell me how to go about doing that.

Thanks,

If you just shoot in letterbox mode it'll be done for you automatically, in-camera.

If you've already shot it, then I'll have to defer to some Premiere users to inform you on the way to crop it, but basically you want to put black bars over the top 60 and bottom 60 pixels.

Thanks, Barry...

I'll give it a shot, and see what I come up with. I've already shot 3/4 of my feature film with just the anamorphic (not in squeeze), but I'm really liking the look of the 2:35:1 aspect that I've seen from other dvxusers...

Just out of curiosity... Do you have a preference?

I tend to not over-obsess with stuff like that. I know that some people insist that shooting letterbox is dumb because you can always re-frame your shot in post and add bars later, and sure that's all true, but -- heck, I say just shoot it right the first time and be done with it. Same with squeeze -- if I want 16:9, I'm not going to stress over shooting 4:3 and extracting in post and exporting a batch of stills to PhotoZoom and up-rezzing there and then re-incorporating it... bah. I say shoot squeeze and move on. Yes there can be little quality improvements garnered by doing so, but there comes a point of diminishing returns...

It's like the 80/20 rule: 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts, and the final 20% of your results come from 80% of your efforts.

The anamorphic adapter can deliver a clearly higher-resolution image than squeeze can, and if you're going for 2.35, it may justify itself. The shooting compromises involved with using the adapter can turn a lot of people off of the idea, but it's not really all that hard. I do prefer the freedom that squeeze gives. For a big-screen presentation the anamorphic can make a nice difference. But squeeze can be very good indeed.

Thanks for the insight, Barry. Very helpful and appreciated... I'm a relatively new filmmaker and premiere user just trying to absorb little by little...

I started working on trying to crop some of my images for test purposes, and the only thing I came across is the CROP plug-in under the effects menu... I dropped that on my clip and it allows me to add the black bars on top and bottom, but it's listed in percents not pixels... Is there another way to go about cropping that I'm missing so I can adjust the pixels?

Thanks for all

most would agree that the anamorphic adapter gives the best picture, but has anyone done any compairisons to squeeze vs squeezing in post (vegas in particluar)
