Cropping a composition... removing a boom mic

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone out there knows how to crop (and correspondingly blow up the crop to the correct frame size) a composition in FCP? I recently shot some footage I can't go reshoot and can see the edge of a reflector board on the side.

I'm guessing resolution will be lost a bit, but theres no other choice. Its either that or the footage is unusable.

I've found some tutorials online, but they all have to do with changing the aspect ratio for widescreen. I'm going to need to crop the footage. (Kind of like in photoshop!)

Thanks guys!

You can "blow up" the footage some without noticeable problems. In a project we did, there were a couple time we had to do that to remove a boom shadow. No one noticed the difference in resolution. We went from 100% to about 120% on those two shots. You just have to look at it afterward and see how it looks to you. In another shot, we weren't able to do that and had to roto the boom shadow out in AE. It was A LOT of work.

It is fairly simple. Double-click on the clip in the timeline to load it into the Viewer. Click on the MOTION tab and adjust the SCALE to make it bigger, then CENTER to move it around (or get into IMAGE + WIREFRAME mode and do it manually). blowing up 10% should be fine, going any larger will result in noticable quality loss, as Blaine noted.

You can also easily paint small things out via Photoshop if the frame is relatively static. Just export one frame- clone the offending stuff out, then make everything else transparent. Reload the .PSD in FCP and overlay onto the footage. If the shot moves you can track it in Motion 3 or hand keyframe it to match. I've fixed tons of shots this way or painted out offending signs, gear, what have you.
