Cropping 4:3 footage to 16:9

Hey, so I've done a long search on this question, but can't seem to find an answer, though I believe it must have been a common question back in the day.

I shot some 4:3 footage with a DVX and want to crop it to a widescreen video.

When I used Vegas, back in the pre-FCP days, I would just import the 4:3 then select the properties of the project and select the Pal Widescreen and the video would automatically be widescreen, hurrah!

However I can't figure out how to do this in FCP. To date, I've imported the footage, added to timeline, FCP says 'change settings?' I say yes and it goes to a 4:3 DV timeline.

But I want it to be 16:9 for widescreen output. The footage, incidentally, was framed for widescreen so that's all fine.

Sorry if this is a common question, but I tried with the old search!

From what I can see when I do that it adds widescreen borders, but it doesn't actually change the video from 4:3 to widescreen as native?

ya the widescreen filter is just adding the black bars on the top and bottom.

if you want it be 16:9, check off the 'anamorphic' setting next to the sequence, as well as next to your clips.

after that when you export your movie, if it ends exporting it as 4:3 such as 720 x 480, just use quicktime to change the size to 853 x 480 or any other size that retains the 16:9 aspect ratio.

i hope this helps. i have been dealing with this a lot lately but finally got it figured out.. :)

Ah I'm on PAL footage so it won't let me change the settings manually, it gets a bit arsey with me!

Effectively what I need to do is to tell it to ignore the extra room at the top and bottom of the image and just keep that as 16:9.

On Vegas it was just wham bam settings to widescreen and done, but I can't see to find that option on FCP!

how about this.. when u drag the clip to the timeline and it asks if you want to change the sequence settings, say no instead of yes.
