Crop/Zoom + Widescreen problem

Hi All,

I'm new to FCP, hence my question:

When I try to crop/zoom in my image (both through the Motion pad -> Scale/Center and the Video Filter -> Perspective -> Basic 3D) and overlay it with the 2.35:1 widescreen, the crop/zoom function changes also the overlay widescreen stripes size.

I tried to Modify -> Composite mode -> Normal/Overlay, etc. to no avail.

What am I doing wrong? Have I inadvertently change some setting?

Instead of using the widescreen filters I just use two slugs to mask out the top and bottom of the frame.

Are you just trying to make something show up in widescreen? Is your sequence anamorphic?

That is the best way to go widescreen in FCP (in my oppinion).

To do this, open a new sequence, and ctrl click the sequence in the browser. A menu should come up. Choose "item Properties -> Item Properties" In the resulting Dialog box there should be a row with "Anamorphic" Click right next to it. A check mark should appear.

I know this is not very much info, but I hope it helps!

Yeah but cropping individual clips (which I need to do) will result in losing uniform slug bar sizes throughot the sequence - and trying to manually make them uniform would be a pain..

Whereas, changing the Sequence's Item properties to Anamorphic only results in Distortion of the aspect ratio. And what I need is no picture stretching, only the 2.35:1 bars and to be able to MANEUVER THE IMAGE (move around, zoom in/out) within the STATIC widescreen bars to correct COMPOSITION.

I'm pretty sure I was able to do it previously in FCP but I must've inadvertently change some setting..

Thank you very much for your answers anyways

By using the 'slug method' you can do exactly this. For example, put your footage on V1, a slug on V2 and another slug on V3. Move the slugs on V2 and V3 down and up respectively to make your 2.35:1 mask. Now you can move/zoom the footage on V1 all you want and the size of the 2.35:1 'window' won't change.

Ah you ARE right! :)

I'm sorry - I didn't think of using separate trcks for that.

That is a solution.

But on a side note - like I said, previously I'm pretty sure I could do that by applying the MATTE -> WIDESCREEN filter to a clip and then WITHIN THE SAME CLIP ON THE SAME TRACK to adjust visual composition of the clip by adjusting the parameters in the MOTION tab of the clip.

But my belief aside, wouldn't it be a more obvious way for a professional suite like FCS2?

Thank you very much adkimery :)
