thank you

Some decent stuff, but it depends on what the goal is and where these shots stand in relation to the desired goal.

A: I don't care for changing the color of the bottle here that I assume is supposed to be a spec commercial, and I doubt the product reps will like that either. The background color is very cool and can work if the bottle is lit properly without the amber spill. The duvetyne covering glasses doesn't work for me either and no glasses are filled which doesn't really serve a purpose or sell the product.

B: The obeject lacking any key is okay of you intend to change the light during the shot and then make the product pop. that's actually a very good technique to employ.

C: the interview pieces aren't working for me. It looks like you duvetyned a window and have reflections of them in it very close. There is no depth as a result and blah background that looks fake.

D: You have two backlights from different directions making it feel staged and unnatural. The of a top light makes the woman's dark hair on top blend into the duvetyne. It's a good idea to avoid characters wearing the same color outfits. The couch color is too close to black void of the window. I'm not seeing the falloff I'd expect to see on the faces, and that's mostly a taste thing, some prefer more even lighting and that be what you were going for.

E: The last one's okay, but like the others the image is flat, it always feels better to me when you can create a sense of depth. Also the background feels rather blah here.

DOn't take any of this personal, it's all subjective and any comments I make are reflective of what I would do, which is doesn't mean it's either wrong or right. The important thing is to work on you skills and develope them and from that bring about your own style.

thanks man, i love the points you brought up.. i did both interview, and bottle w/glasses for fun.... just finished my intro to lighting class at AINY, and love lighting.... so next quarter this practice, and your suggestions will totally help... thanks

location.. my house (interview in living room)
talents: my mum and pa ha

for bottle of booze with glasses... actually sitting on a cardboard box, with a roadsign to make it bigger, and pillow cover with pair of black pants to rest glasses on... pretty ghetto
i used:
1k Arrilite w/ yellow gel, with barndoors - i lowered top flap to make light fade
Arri light stand with black flag -, to cut off highlights at top of glasses and bottle
(NOTE- on still without gel, you can see i had the flag raised, that made the highlight on the bottle.. i then lowered it and did the one with the yellow gel..)
and used the wall - to illuminate it

for interview:
2x 1k Arrilites(1 with chimera softbox) to act as key
other arrilite (w/scrims) to act as fill
2 on-camera(sitting on top of couch) lights to act as backlight/hairlight

If you have the equipment you can try lighting the foreground seperately from the background.

So like a sexy interview style where the background has some colored light design. Then the interviewee has a night key/fill ratio backlight. Need a good amount of flags etc. to eliminate spill.

There was a thread a while back in the dvx clips forum with like 20 interview shots, you could also look at.
