Criticizing my 2011 showreel!

I need some criticism on my 2011 showreel please. [The Good, the Bad and the Ugly]
Most of the shots where taken during my time at college.

Really liked the feel of the real/candids. Didn't care for any of the "staged" shots. They looked mechanical and artificial.

Perhaps this is a matter of taste, but there was too much shaky handheld stuff in there for me. Your reel convinced me that you could do one particular style of cinematography very well, but if that wasn't what I was looking for, I wouldn't be certain you could deliver on a different, less frenetic, dark, high-contrast kind of feel. To qualify yourself for a wide variety of jobs, there really needs to be a mix of different types of work in your reel, at least until you can become established as a specialist in a particular way of doing things.

What you do, you do very well, and with a lot of creativity.

Thanks Greg! I totally agree with you 100%. I really don't want to Siege myself into one type of a cinematography. I will be looking up into this in the future.

The one thing that struck me and distracted me all the time was the very over-the-top and stylized Color "Correction". It seems like there is some good footage in there, but it is buried under the color effects. If your focus is cinematography, then please do yourself a favour and either keep as far away from color-correction as possible, or get people who know what they are doing to color grade your footage. This is my honest opinion and I hope I'm not too harsh.
all the best

Some really nice work in there!

I do think there is merit to the comment regarding over-use of color correction, and the genre/style issue thing as well; but what you did, you did very well.
The music you selected nicely matches the pacing of your edits, too.

A few tweaks, and all will be great...

Alright! I will keep this in mind for sure, "cinematography isn't about color correction indeed but is more about color and light creation!" Thanks a lot!

Way to much CC, which makes it hard to see your ability to light a scene... Looks more like a colorist's reel to me than a cinematographer's reel...

You love your filters don't you?

Well, yes and no! I certainly don't like to color my footage a lot, maybe some minor adjustments but not hard colors. However what I did for my showreel was the opposite, since most of the work were way low budget.
Hopefully I get to practice more on adjusting them and definitely adjusting the light source. :)
