Criterion Collection Petition

Seems strange that the company who originated the "special edition" and was one of the first and is known for releasing films in their original aspect ratios would do this.

But who knows.

Are they windowboxing, or are they pillarboxing?

If pillarboxing, they aren't changing the aspect ratio.
they're windowboxing (aka pictureboxing). this isn't an issue of aspect ratio, its an issue of resolution. here is an example from their release of Late Spring...

the black border you see surrounding the image is intended to counter overscan on subpar displays, but also lowers resolution by making the image smaller. the argument being made by many is why placate inferior displays when the people who are likely to buy these films are enthusiasts who have tweaked the overscan out of their displays already. i know i have and its annoying to watch a film which is essentially letterboxed on all sides.

I know the difference, which is why I asked. Seems to me that if they were pillarboxing 4:3 material for better display on a 16:9 TV, that wouldn't be such a bad thing. But this is different, of course.
