Crime rules.

In a radio interview with a notable writer here, it was mentioned that the worlds leading authors can't make a living writing anything but crime stories.
Is that true?

Came as a bit of a shock and I wondered what has 'lead' to this, no pun.

Cheers.

Crime is certainly a popular genre, but then so is e.g. romance. Or books about sport or cooking for that matter. I don't see anything 'special' about crime, and it's hardly crowding out all the other genres in any bookshop or library i've ever seen.

Looking at what fills the shelves for fiction novels at the local Barnes and Noble, I don't buy into crime stories being all that writers make money writing.
