CREATIVE SOUND DESIGN QUESTION

Hi all,
I'm trying to mess around with portions of my films sound design. What I'm looking to do is to make the audio tracks of the dialogue feel as though we're watching a scene in someone's memory. I'm thinking an echoing effect of some sort might work best.

Anyone have an idea of how to achieve this using FCP's audio filters? If so, which ones?

Thanks for the suggestions in advance

Re: CREATIVE SOUND DESIGN QUESTION

I will have to go into FCP and look for it but there is an ECHO audio effect there...I played around with it before.

Re: CREATIVE SOUND DESIGN QUESTION

Is it Echo or Reverb that's there? And is there a combination of filters I should use to get the best effect?

Re: CREATIVE SOUND DESIGN QUESTION

play around with some verb, of course, but then try layering some reverse gated verbs in and out around the main dialogue. it will give it that creepy weird "mind" effect.

Re: CREATIVE SOUND DESIGN QUESTION

You may be able to import the audio into Soundtrack and then use all the effects filters there to do what you need it to sound like then import that back in FCP. I am not sure if it will work for your needs but its worth a try.

Re: CREATIVE SOUND DESIGN QUESTION

Kai, could you detail a bit on how to "reverse gate a verb" like you suggested? I'm a newbie with these audio filters.

DVX100Shooter, same question. How do I go about exporting the audio track from FCP to Soundtrack? I wasn't aware Soundtrack had effects filters, lol... I just used the loops it came with.

God I hate being a newbie on this stuff.

Thanks for the help.

Re: CREATIVE SOUND DESIGN QUESTION

Yea man there is a whole effects panel in Soundtrack. You need to click on the little asterick symbol that is on each track or you could go to the top menu and select SHOW MASTER EFFECTS.

If you click EFFECTS in the top menu in FINAL CUT PRO, then go down to AUDIO FILTERS, then select Final Cut Pro, then you will see several options including ECHO.

Re: CREATIVE SOUND DESIGN QUESTION

I'll try and give that a shot. Thanks DVX. Anyone else have a suggestion? If so, post it with a course of action. A "how to" if you will... :)

Re: CREATIVE SOUND DESIGN QUESTION

StoryTeller,

I used an effect very similar to this in my short film.

I used the audio filter "Reverberation" with the following settings:

Effect Mix: 9
Effect Level: 0
Brightness: 0
Type: Ambient Room

If you play with the Effect Mix level you can get really subtle effects.

Best of luck,

Chris

Re: CREATIVE SOUND DESIGN QUESTION

What you should deff do is make the echo's bounce from far left to far right audio channels ..... that will be really cool.
