I edit in fcp and what I want to do is have a montage of faces on the screen and then have one move to the front and fill the whole screen as that subject says their piece and then have them recede back to the montage of faces as another subject moves to the foreground and says their piece and then recedes to the background amongst the montage of faces and so on...

How would I achieve such a thing in fcp?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

In FCP you would place the clips where you want them on the timeline above one another and scale them so they are where you want them to show up at the correct size in the canvas window. Then double click on each clip in the timeline one at a time. This will open the clip on the timeline in viewer and then you would open the motion tab and scale and position with key frames where and when you want it to come forward. You could do this in motion or AE but a lot of times for animation like this its just easier to do it in FCP. It depends on wether the faces are all green screened and keyed or are full video clips. It also depends on wether you need any other special effects along with this. If so then another program would probably give you more capabilities.

this probably is easier to do in fcp. however, you will get a better look with after effects. animations look smoother thanks to advanced keyframe interpolation and you can add motion blur to the movement which is huge.

you could key frame the whole thing, and stack each face on it's own layer. use keyframes to change the size of each image. i think you would need to incorporate fading faces out as you bring a new face forward though, as higher layers would cover the lower layers, and you would get small faces on top of big ones that have come forward. you could do that in keyframes as well.
