Creating wipes

I know that in FCP we have preset wipes like venetian blind wipe. But what I want to do is break the picture, lets say in quarters. And then I'd like to bring in the picture one piece at a time. How can I do this quickly. The only way I can think of doing it is laying the same clip in the timeline 4 times! Cutting each one in quarter pieces and then bringing them in when I want. But I was wondering if I'm overlooking an easier way. Any ideas?

Below is a link to a video to look at if I didn't explain it better. Look at around :57 secs into it, its kind of like that transition although mine will be to my liking and probably simpler, just split in 4's like I said, but I want it to come in just like they have in this video...

Yeah you're probly going to just have to manually do it. I'm assuming you're going to do it to a beat also, which means you'll have to key frame it to that anyway. I can't think of any other way? Someone else might.

Thanks for the reply. Well when you say keyframe, with what effect or what part in FCP would you suggest? CROP?

You will have to manually do it, but just once. You coudl dupe the clip 4x and stack them, and then crop each one accordingly.

After you've made each corner do it's thing, save the keyframes as a motion favorite, labeled upper right, lower right, etc. Then when you want to do it again you can paste the keyframing. Don't forget you can copy and paste keyframes/attributes too. If you have After Effects it might be a touch easier.

I still can't believe he used the venetian blind wipe in one of the prequels... It made me want to throw something and walk out.

HAHA!! I hate it too in movies, but it's fitting in music videos which is what I'm using it for. LOL! I never thought that I would start a debate like this. LOL! I agree that the venetian in Star Wars was a bit much. It really made me mad. Though at the same time the regular wipe I could live with because it was a 'Star Wars' move. Then again I wish he would have done what he did with the first 2 movies, HIRE ANOTHER DIRECTOR!!!!

You mean the plot, acting, midichlorians and Jar Jar Binks didn't already make you want to?....I think the wipes work fine in Star Wars films. They aren't "from the 70's" but from the 30's and 40's movie serials he was recreating.
