Creating the "film look" outside of 24p

Hi everyone.

I was wondering if anyone out there could help me out. I am trying to find a good way to create that "film look." For the footage not shot in 24p, I was wondering what everyone suggested for creating the "film look" in FCP. Is there a better program to do it in besides Final Cut? Thanks!

There are some plug ins on the market that claim to do that but I have not worked with anything yet and I cannot remember where I saw them advertised. You can check the FCP page on the Apple website. They have several plugin companies listed there for starters.

I have DVFilm Maker to convert 3:2:2:3 pulldown for clips I need to edit in Premiere 6.5. It does have a feature to convert standard 60I to 24P. Here's the help file that pops up when I select this option:

Convert 60i to 24P - Use this option for standard interlaced NTSC shot at 1/60th sec shutter speed, where you wish to edit at 24P for the purpose of transfer to film or to author a 24P DVD. If this option is selected, all film effects (widescreen, grain, red boost) will be disabled. These effects can be added after editing.

There is also an option to make 24P film like. Here's the help file that pops up when I select this option:

Use 24 fps Motion - Use this option together with the DeInterlace option to create NTSC video that looks like 24 frames/sec film (transferred to NTSC). This option can only be used for regular interlaced NTSC at original speed (i.e. no slow motion), and works best with 1/60th second camera shutter speed. This option yields somewhat "choppy" motion compared with DeInterlace only, but more closely matches the look you have with movies shot on film for theatrical release. Often you must use slower, more film-style camera movement to make this process look good. Use this option for video that has already been edited in an NTSC timeline. If you need 24 frames/sec video for editing in a 24 frames/sec timeline, or you shot with a 24P camera like the DVX100, then use one of the options in the 24P Editing Options popup.

If these sound helpful to you , you can d/l the program here:

and give it a try.

to give interlaced footage a filmish look you could try magic bullet, it gives good results but takes forever to render

Re: Creating the "film look" outside of

is there a way to do this in final cut without a plug-in? ???

Well, before I got my DVX100a, I used to shoot with the Sony PD150 and when my edit was finished I just deinterlaced the whole project in final cut. It took away some of the video edge. I didn't think it looked too bad.

I used to use the included anti-alias filter with an amount of 1. Worked great. De-interlacing also.

Try this one:

1. Duplicate the video track in your Final Cut timeline so you now have two video tracks for one clip.

2. De-interlace the top track to the even field and de-interlace the bottom track to the lower field.

3. Set the opacity of the top track to 50%.

Can someone post a de-interlace workflow in final cut? I have no idea how to go about doing it.

Thanks

Re: Creating the "film look" outside of

you can simply pull the deinterlace filter out of the browser in the effects bin its under video i believe , and drop it on the clip you want to deinterlace in the timeline

FCP needs to come out with a filter called "Film Look." Maybe we can look forward to that in FCP 5...

Was the Star Wars takeoff what you were expecting us to look at? It was GREAT! I'm not a big time Star Wars fan, I've seen the movies with my kids, but i loved that little movie you did. The effects looked perfect - very impressive.

Unfortunately, due to web compression, it is difficult to tell how well the deinterlacing the PD150 footage looked like film. Even normal video looks more like film with the compression. But the way you lit the scene, your cuts, composing, etc. all made it look like a film.

Oh, by the way, there's a product called Joe's Filters, which are filters for FCP and FCE. Go to www.joesfilters.com. He has four or more plug ins that will help create the film look, plus many other filters all for $99. I saw a good review of this product online. One filter is deinterlacing, which he indicates improves on the Final Cut native deinterlacing filter. Another controls frame rate (e.g., 24p, 18p, etc.), another is like a cine gamma, but he doesn't call it that. Also there's a film grain filter too.

I downloaded his demo and tried the deinterlacing and frame rate filters. They seem pretty good. I plan on buying them before my next project.
