Creating that lightning effect

do you want to actually see lightning or do you want to see the flashing light reflected like on walls as if the lightning happened outside the window?

you can get a box with settings to recreate a fire, tv or probably lightning.

where is walter? he always has a simple (usually cheap too) way to do most anything with light.

the confusing part was in the subject he asked for lightning and then in the body he asked for lighting.

i think he wants the one that goes with thunder not the more general lighting.

i think the graff flash box will do what he wants. either that or do it in after effects. one of the after effects tutorial books has a simple effect to simulate a flash-bulb going off and that would be pretty much the same as lightning.

I ended up setting up 2 tungsten's 600w/ea outside a window with gels and one 250w with a gel and hooking all the lights up to a power strip and flickered the lights turned out ok.

You might want to check out Jackman's book "Lighting for Digital Video and Television". I haven't looked at the book in a while, but I seem to recall a fairly detailed section on creating lightening effects in the book.
