creating image sequences and EDL for post work/onlining

Hi.

I have some workflow questions regarding EDLs and image sequences.

How does one go about creating an EDL for onlining DPX files converted from lower-end acquisition formats (P2, XDCAM EX, DVCAM etc), from a timeline from for instance FCP?

In what way should one convert the footage to DPX? Is it possible to convert only the used media (wiith handles) to save rendertime and storage?

How do I make sure the edl works with the image sequences? File naming, folder structure, timecode, metadata etc (for instance for solid state recording you don't capture the footage in the traditional sense, and thus you don't assign tape/reel names)?

Our intent is to load EDLs into Color, After Effects, Fusion 5 and some times send it out for grading in Scratch/Lustre suits.

The simplest method (not free) is Gluetools' DPX plugin which lets you export DPX sequences straight from a timeline.

Otherwise you could send to Color which has the capability of exporting clips to DPX.
