Creating Diffused Audio?

Hi, just curious but does anyone know what type of filter can make a sound more diffuse?

Example would be opening of Collateral all the sounds are blending together with nothing specific about them (diffused). After Cruise picks up the briefcase the sound becomes sharp and focused.

I haven't seen Collateral, so I'm not entirely sure of the specifics of your question, but most likely it was done in the post mix, and there are lots of ways you can do it via EQ, panning, layering, etc.

Since I don't do my post mixes in Vegas, not sure how well Vegas can do this - Protools, Audition, etc. can do this easily.

It could be they were somewhat muted and spread evenly across the 5.1 or stereo field, as well as mixed together, and then seperated and made more distinct through Eq'ing and isolating each in it's own "space" in the surround field. They could have also had a lot of heavy reverbs on them, causing the sounds to "extend" and then tightened up the reverb as well.

Like ptalsky, I don't remember the exact part you refer too, but it could be as simple as laying extra layers of background noise, and then abruptly knocking some of those layers out, seeming to clear up the sounds.
