Creating a wasteland/desert landscape

I want to create a wasteland or a desertlike landscape. We have no such place around here so I can't just go out and shoot it. Is there someway that I can take a green healthy landscape and make it sick and burnt?

I only need it for an overview shot but it's essential to the story. I have thought of making a model landscape and shoot it in closeup, drawing in some kind of 3d program like Bryce.

The most I want to shoot an existing landscape and apply some filter to it.

Any ideas?

Remove green from the image in NLE or effects program. Oh Brother, the movie, had greens removed to make it look drier.

or ask someone who lives in a desert location to send you a short clip...
