creating a tv look

i've got 2 seperate questions here, but here's the background info on the project/scene: in my short film I am filming a newscast that will play on some of the character's television sets.

1. How do I get footage that I have shot to look like it is being played back on a television screen, you know how in movies like The Queen for example that use alot of simulated (or actual) news footage, but the footage isn't super clear and it looks like the actual tv screen is being filmed as opposed to the source footage being dropped into the timeline.

2. For some of the shots I want to superimpose the newscast that I filmed over what's actually playing on the television when we film it. What's the best way to make it look like the footage is coming from behind the glass of the television instead of just composited over it?

adding scanlines will give ya a nice tv effect. I use genarts sapphire as a plug in for this but you can create em in photoshop and animate em if you need to.

I'm not sure I understand yuo second question. You could playback your oroginal footage on a tube tv with a principal standing in front of it if I understand you correctly. Youcould aslo do this for your first effect... shot it off of a tv, complete with screen reflections, ect.

well to clear up the 2nd question, I'm filming a scene this Monday and haven't filmed the newscast that the character will be watching on tv. So I will need to composite the newscast into the footage in post.

ahh
a simple PIP effect with a custom matte will work fine. Adding a glare/hilght will help with the composited over it look. Your matte's edge is the most important thing, imo. I dunno what you are editing with but you can cutom mask i in AE or paint a matte in photoshop then fill that in your NLE. The PIP effect wil only be for scale/positioning. Don't use it's edge.
as far as the highlight, create a ew file in PS. Grab a sift edged paint brush about 75 pixels wide. Mae a quick dot in say th upper rigt corner (look a the lght sorce in your scene and place accordingly.) You can then literally just take yer smudge tool and smear it downward with like a 40 pixel wide brush. Save with alpha and place that on top of your matted video and reduce it's opacity juuuust a bit. Helps bigtime. Look at the tube inthat scene. Mimick that design for your highlite.

or you could just shoot the news cast you want to put on the TV...burn it to a DVD and then play it through the TV while filming....Im not sure what your looking for, but nothing can imitate the real thing better, than the real thing.

No one sees the irony. 24p was invented to make video look like film, now we are asking how do we make it look like video.
