Creating a starry night? - flickers, twinkles, dimming etc?

I'm just wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a tutorial or give me some tips on creating a star filled night sky? Would it be easier to take a photograph and animate it (i.e make it flicker/ blur/ dim etc)? I'm hoping to use it in a couple of different ways - over a landscape scene and looking diretly upwards... If anyone has done a similar thing, i'd be grateful for some help.. thanks

Well, a basic way to make stars is with fractal noise. You scale it down, brightness down a little, then bring the contrast way up. It looks like stars. To get them to flicker is a bit more complicated. Here's an example, doesn't look great due to YouTube style compression, but if you think this is the kind of thing you want, let me know and I could mail you the project file or something.
