Creating a reel-contacting local businesses for pro-bono promotional work

Hi
Just starting out and creating a reel. I need 2 or 3 more solid promotional shorts in my reel before I can go after paid work. I know there are no hard and fast rules in this area, but can anyone share their advice about how to go about finding local small businesses that might not only be interested, but excited about collaborating on short promotional films? Is it ok to do work pro-bono?

I did my first local cable commercial on this kind of a deal. I went to a local business owner I knew and offered to create an ad for him basically at "cost" which would up being $250 worth of gear rental and craft services. Best bet is probably people you know or have some connection with. Just cold call will likely be a tough sell.

Gary's right! In my eyes its never ok to do FREE work for a business that makes money. They're not giving it away, why should you? We charge charity's and not-for-profits a highly reduced rate. If you don't charge for it, what are you saying your services are worth?
